Food Not Bombs Wollongong

We are friends and neighbors sharing free vegan meals and resources on Dharawal land. Every second Sunday 5pm, McCabe Park. We’re volunteer-run, anarchist, secular & aim to foster an inclusive community through mutual aid. Solidarity not charity.

About Us

Food Not Bombs Wollongong is an all-volunteer mutual aid group, part of a global movement dedicated to sharing free vegan meals as a protest against war and poverty. This chapter has been active since August 2024, and we currently serve our clean hand-cooked meals twice a week, using food that would otherwise end in landfill.

Why?

In our current climate there is an incredible amount of food waste which stems from the wealth and greed of a minority who are looking only for profit. Worldwide, there are massive reserves of food which are stored and guarded whilst people starve, and Australia is no exception. Food Not Bombs is here to demonstrate the abundance of food that is available and put it in perspective with the ever-increasing military budget of Australia. There is more than enough for everyone and we demand it be shared so. We know that food is a human right and not a privilege.

Looking to help out? Get in touch with us.

No prior experience is needed to volunteer, and there’s no need to make up-front commitments. Once you’ve contacted us, you’ll be added to our Signal chat where you can introduce yourself and sign up for any of our roles. All our of decisions are made horizontally and by consensus amongst all of our members.

What can you help with?

Most volunteering will occur on the afternoons and evenings of Sunday every fortnight. We try to have at least two volunteers on each role, so nobody has to do things alone unless they want to.

The most common roles are:

  • Finding food (from friends, restaurants, grocery stores, dumpsters, and/or food hubs)
  • Transporting food to the cooks
  • Washing, preparing, cooking, and packaging food
  • Transporting cooked food and gear to our serve location
  • Serving our food to the public

There are also plenty of supplementary roles, which are also extremely important for us:

  • Providing ideas and advice. Even if you are completely new, we value your contribution!
  • Creating art and literature about Food Not Bombs (and related ideas) for us to distribute at serve.
  • Facilitating and attending our meetings.
  • Organising with local events (such as gigs, protests or union actions) which we can serve at.
  • Anything else you can think of!

Remember: Because of the horizontal structure of our organisation, responsibility and initiative are put into your hands. In other words, we’re all just winging it. The secret to getting involved is to join in! We’re a friendly bunch and we’re all learning and figuring things out as we go 🙂
